What can my dog eat?

A lot of people will tell you what a dog can and cannot eat. I always was curious why some of things were said to be bad like Blueberries and Chocolate, so I started doing some research. What I found was really interesting. There isn’t an exact what you can and cannot feed your dog list. It really breaks down into four categories. One being the safest and the fourth being things to avoid for sure list.

I’l start with all the things I found that were 100% safe.

  1. Safe for dogs to eat
  • White and Brown rice
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots (cold crisp baby carrots make a great treat!)
  • Pears
  • Fish
  • Spinach
  • Meat
  • Cantaloupe
  • Peanut butter
  • Pumpkin
  • Bananas

 2. Safe but in small amounts

  • Pineapple
  • Hot dogs
  • Potatoes
  • Watermelon
  • Cheese
  • Mushrooms
  • Bread
  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli

3. Not suggested but will not cause sickness at most an upset stomach

  • Popcorn
  • Shrimp
  • Peppers
  • Corn
  • Marshmallows
  • Cherries
  • Almonds

4. May cause illness if a lot is consumed. Small amounts might cause an upset stomach

  • Walnuts
  • Onions
  • Avocado
  • Grapes
  • Gum
  • Beer
  • Pomegranate
  • Nuts, Walnuts are the worse for dogs.
  • Garlic
  • Gum
  • Chocolate

The main thing is to not panic no matter what they eat, after all their ancestors probably did not have an enticing menu. If they do consume some of the bad food listed here and show any signs of feeling ill. Take them to a veterinarian hospital to get a quick check up.

If you do not have access to a Veterinarian Hospital there is some things you can do to help settle a upset stomach meanwhile. Some pet owners give their pets human Pepto-bismol or Famotidine (Pepcid) for an upset tummy. It’s suggested to take a light dose and is considered safe in small amounts.
